Redefining Treatment Success in Patients With Parkinson’s Disease

CONCLUSIONS

The global burden of PD will continue to increase over the next 25 years, accompanied by a substantial rise in associated healthcare utilization and costs. Challenges in diagnosing PD, specifically in recognizing the subtle nonmotor symptoms of the disease, underscore the need for enhanced awareness of techniques for diagnosing and monitoring the progression of PD. Symptom-based criteria provide effective scales for monitoring treatment of PD, but patient HRQOL should be included in the definition of treatment success. Emerging disease-modifying therapies may provide improved long-term patient outcomes and increased treatment success for patients with PD. Until clinical research identifies disease-specific biomarkers to allow the development of neuroprotective therapies, effective management of the motor and nonmotor symptoms of PD through an individualized, patient-focused perspective is needed to minimize disability, improve HRQOL, and ultimately achieve treatment success.
