Intended Audience

This activity is intended for neurologists involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Program Goal

The educational program is designed to introduce neuroprotection as a therapeutic goal in Parkinson's disease (PD) and familiarize participants with the evidence for neuroprotective activity with agents such as monoamine oxidase-B (MAO-B) inhibitors and dopamine agonists.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to

  • Recognize the importance of neuroprotective treatment in PD
  • Describe the neuroprotective mechanisms by which pharmacologic agents stand to modify PD progression
  • Explain the evidence for neuroprotective activity of MAO-B inhibitors (eg, rasagiline, selegiline), dopamine agonists (eg, ropinirole, pramipexole), and other agents
  • Recognize that early administration of many potential neuroprotective agents is associated with improved clinical outcomes and can delay the need for levodopa treatment
  • Discuss advances in PD diagnosis and imaging that allow for earlier administration and assessment of potential neuroprotective therapies
Unapproved/Off-Label Use Disclosure

The EOCME requires CME faculty to disclose to the participants

  1. When products or procedures being discussed are off-label, unlabeled, experimental, and/or investigational (not US Food and Drug Administration [FDA] approved); and
  2. Any limitations on the information that is presented, such as data that are preliminary or that represent ongoing research, interim analyses, and/or unsupported opinion.

Faculty may discuss information about pharmaceutical agents that is outside of FDA-approved labeling. This information is intended solely for continuing medical education and is not intended to promote off-label use of these medications. If you have questions, contact the medical affairs department of the manufacturer for the most recent prescribing information.
